Russell Westbrook did not go into detail about what happened that led to his fiery exchange with John Wall during their game against the Houston Rockets. However, the Washington Wizards guard made two things clear: he didn’t start it and he was just defending himself.
In the fourth quarter of the Wizards-Rockets game on Tuesday, Russ and Wall figured into a heated verbal altercation that resulted to the two players getting a double technical. While it appeared their emotions got the better of them–considering they were traded for each other before the 2020-21 season started–Westbrook noted that he just responded to the trash talk thrown at him.
“I don’t start talking s**t. … I just defend myself–people just say anything–especially when I know the facts. I think they just started talking s**t because they started to win at that time. It’s all right. We play them again,” Westbrook said about his exchange with Wall, per Tim MacMahon of ESPN.
True enough, the incident only happened when the Rockets were leading by 13 points, up 91-84 against the Wizards with just a little over five minutes remaining in the game.
For what it’s worth, John Wall said that his heated exchange with Russell Westbrook was “just basic basketball trash talk.” The Rockets star then went on to detail his respect for Brodie, noting that he has been “kicking my ass for years.”
The Rockets won the contest 107-88. Wall also outplayed Westbrook, finishing with 24 points, two rebounds and five assists. Russ, for his part, ended up with 19 points, 11 boards and seven dimes in a losing effort for the Wizards.
Fortunately for fans, they won’t have to wait that long for the two stars to face off again. The Rockets are scheduled to visit the Wizards at Capital One Arena next month.
