Warriors news: Golden State’s top 5 matchups to watch during the 2017-18 season

James Harden, Stephen Curry

The Golden State Warriors will once again head into the NBA regular season as the team to beat, getting every franchise’s best shot game after game. With that said, here are the must-watch five games of this regular season in proper timeline order.

Warriors vs. Rockets (Opening Day) — 09/17/17 — airs on TNT at 7:30 p.m. PT

The first game of the season is always a measuring test to see how the team will approach the beginning stages. It is also a chance for the bolstered Rockets to assert themselves as a true powerhouse in a talent-loaded Western Conference.

Yet the show will be a battle for the best backcourt, as Chris Paul and James Harden face Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, who have put on major mileage after playing the last three postseasons to the very end.

Warriors vs. Timberwolves — 11/08/17 — airs on ESPN at 7:30 p.m. PT

One of the most-improved teams this offseason, the Wolves will make a hard push for the playoffs and will trot out young guns Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns along with Jimmy Butler, Jeff Teague, and Taj Gibson — giving the team’s starting lineup a completely different look.

Minnesota also will have three-time Sixth Man of the Year Jamal Crawford coming off the bench, giving the team’s second unit plenty of firepower.

Warriors vs. Thunder — 11/22/17 — airs on ESPN at 5:00 p.m. PT

The rivalry between Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant might not burn as hot as last season, but there’s still much to prove between the two former teammates as they both garnered MVP honors, one in the regular season, and the other in the NBA Finals.

The Thunder are a much better team on paper now that they have reloaded with the trade for Paul George and the addition of Patrick Patterson as a versatile big that can make the difference in the perimeter.

Warriors @ Lakers — 11/29/17 — airs on NBA TV at 7:30 p.m. PT

A preview of what can turn into a soon-to-be rivalry in the Western Conference, as the up-and-coming Lakers trot out their brand new backcourt of Lonzo Ball and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope along with big man Brook Lopez at the center spot. Julius Randle has looked up to Draymond Green’s game, looking to replicate his defensive intensity and all-around feel for the game. Los Angeles will make a hard push at major free agents the next offseason, making a potential rivalry a very near possibility.

Warriors vs. Cavaliers (Christmas Day) — 12/25/17 — airs on ABC at 12:00 p.m. PT

A team that has sparked many postseason battles, the Cavaliers will look to prove that they’re still a championship contender despite their short-lived stint in the NBA Finals. While it is unknown if All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving will be a part of the team by then, LeBron James is likely to have an ace up his sleeve after a torrid offseason workout regimen meant to get him tuned up for yet another clash of the titans.
