Warriors coach Steve Kerr ‘didn’t notice officiating’ in Game 2, says game ‘was just about basketball’

The second-round series between the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets was surrounded by controversy after Game 1 when the referees were once again put on the hot seat thanks to a series of missed calls that drew the ire of both sides, but especially the Rockets.

The Warriors won Game 1, 104-100, but a report showed the refs missed 17 calls for Houston, an alarming number considering they lost by only four points (11 missed for Golden State). With Rockets nemesis Scott Foster assigned to Game 2, there was concern things would get even uglier, but that wasn’t really the case in a 115-109 Warriors victory.

After the game, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr told reporters he believes the refs did a better job in Game 2, and that the outcome was decided by the players themselves:

After losing Game 1, Houston expressed its concerns about how the NBA referees tend to favor the Warriors in the playoffs. The Rockets even conducted some data-driven research to prove their claim, putting together a report with information they gathered dating back to the conclusion of last year’s Western Conference Finals, where they faced and lost to Golden State in seven games.

It’s certainly a positive that the officiating wasn’t as much of a story in Game 2, and we can only hope that trend continues after the fallout of the Game 1 ugliness. Games 3 and 4 will be played in Houston, where the Rockets have the perfect opportunity to tie the series at two games apiece. The Warriors will look to steal one game and push their opponent to the brink of elimination.
