Video: Warriors’ Klay Thompson appeared to step out of bounds before crucial final basket in Game 5

Klay Thompson, Warriors

The Golden State Warriors pulled out a miracle in Game 5 against the Houston Rockets, winning 104-99 despite the absence of Kevin Durant for the final 14 minutes of the game because of a calf injury. Part of that miracle was a Klay Thompson bucket in the final seconds to salt the game away after he nearly turned it over seconds earlier. It was a wild sequence:

However, upon closer review, Thompson may have stepped out of bounds before getting off that pass that was nearly a turnover:

This is really, really, really close. It does look like Thompson may have stepped out of bounds before releasing the pass, but it’s not totally definitive. It’s tough to tell just when the ball left his hand compared to when the foot came down on the floor. If this was reviewed, it may have been one of those calls where it simply wasn’t conclusive enough to overturn it.

Rockets fans can’t be happy about the lack of review, but it’s worth pointing out that Houston was still down by three points before this play happened. Even if Thompson was ruled out of bounds, the Rockets would’ve still needed to hit a 3-pointer to tie or a quick 2-pointer to prolong the game. And in either of those cases, they would’ve likely needed another defensive stop or missed free throws.

So, while this call certainly didn’t help Houston, it didn’t necessarily cost them the game either. The Rockets had plenty of other opportunities to steal this game, especially with Durant out, but they couldn’t get the job done.

The Warriors will have a chance to close out the Rockets in Game 6 on Friday, but they’ll have to do it without Durant.
