Video: Rockets’ James Harden went straight to the gym after scoring outburst against Spurs

James Harden, Rockets

The work and grind never stops for Houston Rockets star James Harden.

Despite putting up 61 points in one of the most efficient high-scoring games in NBA history, Harden wasn’t satisfied and stayed late for a workout in the team’s facility.

Maybe Harden didn’t break enough of a sweat against the San Antonio Spurs? That seems surprising given how Friday’s game between the longtime Texas powers played out. The outcome hung in the balance until the final minute, when Chris Paul put San Antonio away at the free throw line after James Harden had previously brought his team back from a narrow deficit by scoring 13 straight points in crunch time.

Light work, apparently.

According to Basketball Reference, Harden’s epic performance on Friday marks the fifth time in NBA history a player has scored at least 61 points while taking no more than 34 field goal attempts. LeBron James pulled off that feat in 2014, Kobe Bryant did it two times and Karl Malone once back in 1990. None of them did it quite like Harden, though, who went 19-of-34 from the field, 9-of-13 from beyond the arc and 14-of-17 at the free throw line, staking his claim for his second consecutive MVP.
