Houston already knew what to do to seal the win. As Luka Doncic was dribbling the ball down the floor, three Rockets players met him mid-court, which forced him to pass the ball to Brunson, who thought he had a clean look, but Paul came out of nowhere to block his leaning fade-away jumper.
It was once again another Texas classic.
Although the Mavericks will be missing the playoffs, they stood their ground against the Rockets, who currently hold the third spot in the Western Conference standings. Unfortunately for them, they can’t close the game out, and Houston’s experience in crucial situations overwhelmed them in the end.
The Rockets’ backcourt tandem of James Harden and Chris Paul struggled to shoot the ball against the Mavs. Harden finished with 20 points on 7-25 shooting. Luckily for him, his teammates were ready to step up. While Paul only had two points on 2-11 shooting.
The Mavs capitalized on the Rockets’ shooting slump through Doncic (19 points, 15 rebounds, five assists) and Brunson (18 points, seven boards, four dimes). However, only one other Maverick was able to score in double figures, and that is Maxi Kleber, who had 10 points. This made it easier for Houston to predict who will take the last shot for Dallas.
And they’ve defended them well.
