Video: Rockets’ Austin Rivers confronts heckler who said Doc Rivers ‘suck at coaching’

Austin Rivers, Doc Rivers, Rockets

Talking smack to Houston Rockets guard Austin Rivers about his father’s coaching ability is likely not the best of ideas. Just ask this fan who decided that with the cameras out would be the best time to mouth off.

Austin Rivers’ father, as everyone probably knows, is Doc Rivers. And if anyone needs any reminding, he is the former head coach of the Boston Celtics who won the 2008 NBA Championship.

As further proof that he does not ‘suck at coaching’ — despite what this fan may believe — Doc Rivers was also named Coach of the Year all the way back in 2000 and still heads the LA Clippers, having carved out a 20-year career as a head coach.

Could these sour grapes have something to do with the fact that the elder Rivers made sure his son was a part of his Clippers’ squad for four seasons? Possibly. But at the same time, you’d then have to give Doc credit for not dragging his feet when his son was traded off his roster during the off-season in exchange for Marcin Gortat, whom the team recently released.

As for Austin, it’s been a whirlwind of a year that has seen him thrust into the playoff picture with James Harden and the Rockets. For all the criticism tossed on Austin’s way, he is in the midst of his seventh NBA season and averages 9.3 points per game for his career while shooting 34.9 percent from deep. Despite those good fortunes, he’s clearly not going to let that type of heckling slide, no matter the circumstance.
