VIDEO: Robert Covington embarrasses Kristaps Porzingis at the rim with huge denial

Kristaps Porzingis, Rockets, Robert Covington, Mavs

Houston Rockets wing Robert Covington just exhibited what type of form he’s in coming into the season restart.

The 6-foot-7 forward decided to meet Dallas Mavericks big man Kristaps Porzingis at the rim on a dunk attempt, and it did not end well for the latter.

Here’s a look at Covington’s impressive block on the 7-foot-3 Porzingis.

Kristaps Porzingis looked like he was going to throw down a wide-open dunk, but unfortunately for him, the Rockets swingman had other plans. So much for an eight-inch height advantage.

Much has been made about Houston’s small-ball lineups, and once again, Robert Covington started at center for head coach Mike D’Antoni in the Rockets’ opening game in the bubble.

While this unconventional lineup has been effective for the most part, it has not been short of criticism from the pundits. For one, some experts are concerned about how an undersized Rockets side can match up in the playoffs against teams with legitimate 7-foot big men. Well, Covington just showed them up here with his tremendous defensive play on Porzingis.

Nevertheless, the lack of size still remains a real issue for the Rockets. Their small-ball style of play allows them to push the pace on the offense, but their ability to defend opposing big men will still be a cause for concern. The Los Angeles Lakers are the top team in the West right now, and they are being led by a 6-foot-10 Anthony Davis. It’s hard to imagine how a guy like Covington — who is an excellent defender on his own right — will be able to contain Davis throughout a full series.
