During an interview with Taylor Rooks of Bleacher Report, San Antonio Spurs shooting guard DeMar DeRozan spoke about the protest he, Houston Rockets superstar point guard Russell Westbrook and rapper Kendrick Lamar attended in Compton, California.

DeRozan says he saw a black man get beat up by Compton police officers and immediately called his high school basketball coach. The next day, the protest was organized after DeRozan’s high school coach spoke to the mayor of Compton:

DeMar DeRozan and Russell Westbrook have been friends for years. The Spurs and Rockets star are both California kids.

Meanwhile, Kendrick Lamar is from Compton, so he has always been trying to instill change in his community.

DeRozan and the Spurs are among the 22 teams scheduled to partake in the “bubble” games down in Orlando, Florida. San Antonio will be battling it out with the Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Pelicans, Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns and Portland Trail Blazers for the final playoff spot in the West.

Before the season was suspended in March, DeRozan was averaging 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.6 assists for the Spurs. The four-time All-Star was also shooting 52.6 percent from the field, 26.7 percent from beyond the arc and 84.3 percent from the free-throw line.

The Spurs franchise hasn’t missed the playoffs since 1997. This could finally be the season that incredible streak is broken, as San Antonio faces an uphill climb to make the postseason since All-Star power forward LaMarcus Aldridge won’t be playing in the restart after undergoing shoulder surgery.
