Trae Young records highest-scoring game for a Hawks rookie since 1975

Trae Young

The Atlanta Hawks lost to the Houston Rockets on Monday night, but during the defeat, rookie guard Trae Young exploded for 36 points, marking the highest-scoring game for a Hawks rookie since John Drew dropped 38 points in 1975:

Young made 12 of his 23 shots, going 8-of-12 from 3-point range. He also went 4-of-4 from the free-throw line and added eight assists in addition to his point total.

On the season overall, Young is averaging 17.5 points, 7.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds over 30.4 minutes per game while shooting 41.0 percent from the floor, 32.9 percent from long distance and 80.9 percent from the charity stripe.

In the month of February, the 20-year-old has been particularly impressive, registering 22.2 points, 9.2 assists and 3.9 boards across 32.8 minutes a night while making 41.1 percent of his field goal attempts, 43.9 percent of his 3-point tries and 81.3 percent of his foul shots.

Unfortunately for Young, he will almost always be measured up to the draft night trade in which he was selected by the Dallas Mavericks with the fifth overall pick and then dealt to the Hawks for No. 3 overall selection Luka Doncic, who will likely be the Rookie of the Year.

Young, who played his collegiate basketball at the University of Oklahoma, drew some Stephen Curry comparisons when he came out of college, with his seemingly unlimited range tantalizing teams drafting in the lottery.

However, thus far this season, Young has been very inconsistent from downtown, with February representing the only month thus far that he has shot above average from beyond the arc.

Atlanta fell to 20-41 with the loss.
