Top 10 fantasy NBA basketball point guards, ranked

NBA

As another NBA season is set to begin in ten days, it’s not only the teams themselves that are putting the final touches to their roster. Fans all over the globe are also scrambling to put together the most formidable roster possible in each of their fantasy basketball leagues.

To better help you in strategizing your selections, we’ve ranked the best point guards entering 2018-2019 according to their statistics, skills, and potential.

10. Jrue Holiday, New Orleans Pelicans

Elfrid Payton, Jrue Holiday, Pelicans

Jrue is entering the new season as the New Orleans Pelicans unquestioned lead guard. Although primarily manning the two position, he’ll still be chiefly in-charge of creating plays and setting up his teammates for easy buckets.

After averaging 19.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 1.5 steals on 49% field goal shooting and 79% from the line, we should see these numbers increase as he’s given more responsibilities on both sides of the floor. As evidenced by those numbers, Holiday is a natural born scorer who can get you buckets from anywhere on the court. If you’re interested in acquiring his services, be prepared to use up a late first or early second round pick on him.

9. Devin Booker, Phoenix Suns

The Phoenix Suns are supremely thin at point guard and they will look for their third-year superstar Devin Booker to help them fill the void. Don’t be surprised if he ends up being their starting point guard at some point in the season.

Devin Booker

Booker started his career out as a deadly scorer but has slowly evolved his game to become better rounded. While he doesn’t offer many defensive stats – 0.9 steals and 0.3 blocks for his career – what he does offer is a lot of points, threes, and a healthy number of rebounds and assists. If you’re looking to lock up these statistics in your league, DBook is an appealing option in the earlier rounds of your draft.

8. Donovan Mitchell, Utah Jazz

The steal of last season has propelled himself into the conversation for the best point guard in fantasy basketball title. Donovan Mitchell, who is only entering his second year, is the Utah Jazz’s undisputed primary option on offense. After averaging 20.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.5 steals, and 2.4 three-pointers on 43.7% shooting during his rookie campaign, these numbers should only improve.

Donovan Mitchell

Mitchell, like many personalities on this list, can score points fairly easily, rebound, and rack up a lot of dimes. But what truly sets him apart are his makes from the great beyond and ability to swipe the ball. Both his threes and steals number are severely underrated, yet things that fantasy owners will undoubtedly kill for.

After a strong season that saw them reach the second round, the Jazz – and Donovan, in particular – are primed for another historical year.

7. John Wall, Washington Wizards

John Wall is still firmly in the discussion for the best point guard, not only from a fantasy perspective but also in reality. However, a nagging knee injury slowed him down in 2017-2018 and limited the five-time NBA All-Star to only 41 games.

Still, the man known as Optimus Dime is still the Washington Wizard’s leader and principal proponent on offense. While his points, assists, and steals are almost a sure thing; he’ll be a sneaky source of rebounds and blocks as well. If you intend on drafting Wall, though, be sure you can stomach his sub-par shooting percentages and penchant for turnovers.

However, with Wall fully recovered from his injury, he should once again be back to his old ways and rewarding owners with double-doubles anytime he plays.

6. Kemba Walker, Charlotte Hornets

Kemba has been a revelation for the last three seasons. After starting his career out on the wrong foot, he came back with a vengeance and has averaged 22.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.3 steals, and a scintillating 2.7 threes per game since 2015-2016. Furthermore, he’s only missed a total of six games within that time, which is truly a magnificent feat.

Now that he’s solidified himself as one of the best options for point guards, his ascent should only continue. With Dwight Howard now patrolling the paint and a slew of young guys on the Hornet’s roster, don’t be surprised if Walker has yet another career year. He’ll be a breakout candidate to keep your eyes on.

5. Ben Simmons, Philadelphia 76ers

Ben Simmons, Sixers

The 2018 NBA Rookie of the Year entered last season with a lot of question marks – namely to his injury history, shooting ability, and approach to the game. But as soon as Ben Simmons stepped on the court, he immediately proved his doubters wrong.

After averaging 15.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, 8.2 assists, 1.7 steals, and almost 1.0 block per game on 54.5% shooting from the field and forming a dynamic duo with Joel Embiid, Simmons has proven that trusting The Process was indeed well worth it. The do-it-all player will look to take the next step in his development by improving his free-throw percentage and adding a consistent outside shot that goes beyond ten feet. If he can do this consistently, the sky is the limit for one of the NBA’s best young point guards.

4. Kyrie Irving, Boston Celtics

Now that he has a full season of playing in Brad Steven’s system under his belt, Kyrie Irving will look to build on an impressive 2017-2018 season as the Celtic’s number one offensive weapon. A knee injury may have cut his campaign short, but Uncle Drew still produced 24.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 2.8 threes made, to go along with excellent percentages in 60 games played.

Kyrie Irving, Celtics

Even with Gordon Hayward back from injury and Terry Rozier III breathing down his neck, we still fully expect Uncle Drew to maintain his high level of production. Armed with an ability to cradle defenders to sleep with his ball-handling, finishing at the rim, and stepping out beyond the arc, Irving is primed to lead Boston to a deep playoff run and another year as one of the best point guards in the league.

3. Chris Paul, Houston Rockets

As he enters the deep waters of his career, CP3 has still maintained his footing as one of the very best floor generals to ever play this game. Chris Paul, who just recently signed a contract extension to remain with the Houston Rockets, will enter his 14th NBA season.

Despite this mileage, he still averaged 18.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 7.9 assists, 1.7 steals, 1.3 three-pointers made last season as the team’s secondary playmaker. These numbers become even more amazing once you realize that he shares a backcourt with usage monster James Harden. Efficiency and high basketball IQ have been almost synonymous with Paul, and these are big reasons why he remains a popular selection in fantasy basketball drafts all over the world.

2. Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder

The Westbeast yet again made history as he averaged a triple-double for the second straight season. During the 2017-2018 campaign, he pumped in 25.4 points, 10.1 rebounds, 10.3 assists, and 1.8 steals per contest. With Carmelo Anthony now firmly out of the picture, he and Paul George should reward their owners with early round value as soon as October 17th begins and average something closer to two years ago.

In order to upend the point guard in our number one slot, Russell Westbrook will need to improve his 44.7% shooting clip from the field, a career-low 73.7% from the line, and cut his turnovers in half. If he is able to pull this off – and that’s a big if – he should reclaim the top spot once again.

1. Steph Curry, Golden State Warriors

Stephen Curry, Warriors

CP

Despite the resurgence of Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, Steph Curry is still the Golden State Warrior’s primary offensive scorer. His ability to run through screens, move without the ball, and light it up from virtually anywhere on the court makes him a matchup nightmare on any given night.

Arguably the best shooter this league has ever seen, Curry averaged a blistering 4.2 makes from three last season, to go along with 26.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 6.1 assists, and 1.6 steals, all with stellar shooting percentages. As the Dubs attempt to win their third championship in a row, managers should expect a few maintenance days in between games, but also a pristine 8-cat line any time he sets foot on a basketball court.

The man known as Chef Curry will definitely be cooking up something hot in 2018-2019. If you’ve been blessed with a pick at the beginning of the first round, don’t hesitate in selecting him because he just might be the key ingredient to going all the way.
