Tilman Fertitta admits he was ‘surprised’ by Rockets’ decision to cut Carmelo Anthony

Carmelo Anthony’s stint with the Houston Rockets was a surprisingly short one that left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. However, according to the team owner Tilman Fertitta, he was surprised that Melo was cut from the team.

In an interview with SNY’s Ian Begley, Fertitta revealed he was taken aback by the decision of his basketball ops. He noted, however, that he trusts the decision his team makes — even though some may not understand it.

“You know, it’s really unusual because I never really got a chance to meet Melo but all I heard is what a gentleman he was and that he was going to play whatever part or role on the team that the coaches wanted him to play,” Fertitta explained.

“And basketball ops decided to make a decision and, you know, it kinda surprised me too, as a fan of the Houston Rockets. But I know what I know and I know what I don’t know. And if my basketball ops thought that we should move on, then I sure wasn’t going to tell them not to, even though I thought that Melo’s one the greatest players to ever play the game.”

Anthony played only 10 games for the Rockets, averaging 13.4 points and 5.4 rebounds rebounds in 29 minutes of play. He wasn’t able to find a team ever since being cut by Houston.

There are plenty of basketball players who believe Melo can still hoop. Enes Kanter said that his former teammate can easily provide points to any NBA team. Moreover, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving reportedly want him on the Brooklyn Nets, though the question of him fitting in still looms.

It remains to be seen if Melo will be able to find a new place to call home. Until then, he will have to live with the fact that Houston is a black mark on his otherwise decorated NBA career.
