Thunder GM Sam Presti speaks out on Russell Westbrook’s return to Oklahoma City

Thunder, Russell Westbrook

Thursday is going to be an emotional night for Houston Rockets superstar point guard Russell Westbrook, as the former MVP returns to Oklahoma City to face the Thunder.

Westbrook is the most popular player in Thunder franchise history. He’s going to get his No. 0 jersey retired and will probably get a statue outside Chesapeake Energy Arena one day.

Thunder general manager Sam Presti spoke with reporters about what Westbrook’s return to OKC is going to be like:

It was an incredible run for Russell Westbrook with the Thunder. The eight-time All-Star and 2017 MVP finished his SuperSonics/Thunder career with averages of 23.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 8.4 assists. Russ averaged a triple-double the past three seasons.

Westbrook is the Thunder franchise leader in points, free throws and box/minus. The explosive guard embraced OKC and the people from day one and always put that Thunder jersey on with pride. Westbrook was more than just a basketball player to OKC. He was an idol and hero.

The ESPN “30 for 30” on the Thunder is going to be epic and sad at the same time. The franchise had Kevin DurantJames Harden and Westbrook on the team at one point. All three players have won an MVP. The team, though, has zero championships on its résumé.

With the Rockets this season, Westbrook is averaging 24.1 points, 7.9 rebounds and 7.0 assists while shooting 42.6 percent from the field, 23.5 percent from beyond the arc and 78.4 percent from the free-throw line.
