There are conflicting reports about Sixers’ potential interest in Carmelo Anthony
Ten-time All-Star Carmelo Anthony is reportedly on the outs with the Houston Rockets and could be released soon. After pulling off a stunner with the Jimmy Butler trade, there are rumors saying the Philadelphia 76ers are interested in Anthony if he indeed leaves the Rockets.
Chris Sheridan of Get More Sports wrote on this news:
So where will he land next? Sources are telling Get More Sports that the Philadelphia 76ers are interested in using him as a plug-in at power forward now that they have a gaping hole at that position.
Anthony cannot be traded until Dec. 15, so the most likely move for the Rockets is placing him on waivers. The Sixers could put in a claim on him, and the starting five in Philly by the end of the week could be Ben Simmons, Markelle Fultz/J.J. Redick, Joel Embiid, Jimmy Butler and ‘Melo. (Stephen A. Smith reported on ESPN today that the Fultz as starter experiment is over.)
However, Kyle Neubeck of The Philly Voice is reporting the opposite:
In other #Sixers news, received a text from a team source categorically denying report this morning that they were/are kicking the tires on Carmelo Anthony.

Still, Carmelo Anthony could be a potential fit for the Sixers as a backup power forward, where Mike Muscala currently resides. The team lost a combined 22.4 points when they traded away Robert Covington and Dario Saric, and Covington was one of Philly’s best 3-point shooters. Anthony isn’t the shooter he once was, but he could still help in that area.
Anthony’s defensive issues would remain problematic, but having Butler, Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons around could mitigate them.
Of course, all of this is just hearsay for now. Carmelo Anthony is still a member of the Rockets, and we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
