With an 11-25 record and the owners of the 14th spot in the Western Conference, there is speculation that the Houston Rockets could move some of their players at the trade deadline. With the team currently mired in a 15-game losing streak and the playoffs out of reach, general manager Rafael Stone could begin a rebuilding plan and focus on gathering young talent and draft assets.
Among the Rockets’ players who are rumored to be on the trading block include guards Victor Oladipo and John Wall. However, one player who is unlikely to be part of trade discussions is center Christian Wood, who the team signed in the offseason.
According to Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype, who spoke to executives who had talks with the Rockets, Wood is the only player who is “as close as possible to untouchable.”
The 25-year-old, who the Rockets acquired in a sign-and-trade with the Detroit Pistons during the offseason, was one of the team’s key additions. It’s easy to see why the Houston front office would want to hold on to Wood, as he is averaging a career-best 22 points, 10.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.5 blocks while shooting 55.8% from the field and 42.1% from downtown.
The UNLV product has missed the last 15 games for the Rockets after suffering an ankle injury last month, and could also miss the team’s next game on Sunday against the Boston Celtics. But the team’s executives already like what they’ve seen in his first 17 games in a Houston uniform to make him an important part of their future plans.
Wood’s next opportunity to return to the court will be on Tuesday when the Rockets face the Atlanta Hawks.
