Suns plan to offer max deal to Clint Capela in free agency

The Phoenix Suns are cooking up some plans this offseason. In need of a shot in the arm to turn their fate around, the Suns are looking to make a splash in the upcoming free agency period, and one player that they have been reportedly targeting is Houston Rockets center Clint Capela.

This according to an unnamed league source, via Kelly Iko of USA TODAY.

According to a league source, one such team is the Phoenix Suns. They have kept tabs on him throughout the season, and have reportedly become “enamored” with him. They have plans to offer Capela a max or near-max contract once free agency begins. The source requested anonymity because he isn’t authorized to comment on the Suns’ plans.

The Suns finished the recent regular season with a 21-61 record – the second worst in the franchise’s history. Phoenix has not had a winning season since 2014. The team has failed to win more than 24 games in each of the past three seasons.

Capela is a restricted free agent this coming summer, but the Suns have some breathing room in their cap space to make a big offer for the Rockets big man.

Capela has improved greatly over the past two seasons. He averaged 13.9 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks over 74 games in the recently concluded regular season. A year prior, he had 12.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game.

Getting Capela would also likely mean the end of Alex Len’s stint in Phoenix. Len is bound for free agency this year, while veteran Tyson Chandler has a season left on his current deal worth $13.58 million.
