Suns GM addresses trade with Rockets

Suns, Rockets

The trade between the Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets that’s bringing Ryan Anderson to the Suns was made official by the teams Friday.

The full trade has Anderson and rookie guard De’Anthony Melton going to the Suns, with Marquese Chriss and Brandon Knight going to Houston. Anderson had about $5.7 million in guaranteed money chopped off his contract in 2020 in order to match Knight’s guaranteed deal, but Anderson could still recoup that money.

Suns general manager Ryan McDonough had this to say about the deal:

“We are excited to welcome Ryan Anderson and De’Anthony Melton to Phoenix,” said General Manager Ryan McDonough. “Ryan has established himself as one of the league’s best shooters and we think he’ll be a great fit in our offensive system. De’Anthony is a talented young guard who stood out for us throughout the pre-Draft process and at the NBA Summer League.”

“We’d like to thank Brandon and Marquese for their contributions to the Suns franchise over the past few seasons. We wish them the best of luck as they begin the next chapter of their careers with the Rockets.”

The Suns reportedly plan to start Anderson at power forward as they attempt to make a playoff push. While the 30-year-old just had a down year with the Rockets, he’s still a lethal 3-point shooter and can help space the floor for Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton and Co.

Melton impressed during Summer League with the Rockets, averaging 16.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals in 30.0 minutes per game. He’s viewed as a potential draft steal after falling to No. 46.

Phoenix is still seeking an update at point guard, though, and McDonough has reportedly made offers for Damian Lillard, Kemba Walker and Terry Rozier. Nothing has come to fruition yet, but the Suns are being aggressive in their efforts to make a big leap in the loaded Western Conference after winning a league-worst 21 games last season.
