Scott Brooks jokes that James Harden is overrated
James Harden is a lock for the MVP award this season, as many critics and players would say. It’s been his best season so far, guiding the Houston Rockets to first place in the Western Conference. Indeed, Harden has been praised all season long for his work. So his former coach Scott Brooks decided to slip in a little jab.
As reported by Candace Buckner of PostSports, Brooks joked that Harden is “overrated”:
#Wizards coach Scott Brooks w/ media, sharing the perils of the #Rockets 3-point shooters.
James Harden, who played under Brooks in OKC, walks by.
Harden: “Ain’t talkin’ bout nothing, Scotty.”
Then says loud enough for Harden to hear… “He’s overrated btw.”

Brooks, who is now head coach of the Washington Wizards, was obviously just playing with Harden. After all, the two spent some time with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Back then, Brooks already saw Harden’s potential, especially the way he executed pick and roll plays. Brooks relied on Harden to lead the second unit and inserted him from time to time when the team needed a spark.
As reported by Tim MacMahon of ESPN, Brooks believes that the Thunder wouldn’t have gone to the NBA Finals without him:
“We wouldn’t have gotten to the Finals without him,” Brooks said, in which the Thunder lost to the Miami Heat, led by James. “He was a terrific player. Unfortunately, we didn’t keep him.”
So what’s exactly Brooks’ feelings for Harden? Is he overrated or is he the best player in the league today deserving of that MVP award? Brooks said of Harden:
“But James is deserving. He put in a lot of work. He’s gotten better every year. Sometimes, it’s hard to do that when you’re at a high level. He’s been at an MVP level for the last three years or so.”
