Russell Westbrook shoulders blame for Rockets’ loss to Knicks

Russell Westbrook, Rockets

Russell Westbrook and the Houston Rockets have been on a tear as of late, winning their last six games prior to taking on the lowly New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Monday.

However, that winning streak was surprisingly snapped, as they were ambushed by the third-worst team in the Eastern Conference, 125-123.

Westbrook, however, was quick to assume the blame shortly after the shocking defeat.

“We were supposed to come out and take care of business to be completely honest and that starts with myself… So, this one’s on me. I didn’t bring the amount of pressure I needed to be able to make us go. So, I’ll take this one and get ready for the next one,” Russell Westbrook said, per Rockets beat reporter Salman Ali.

The Rockets’ meltdown should not be pinned on Westbrook’s shoulders alone. He did his part with 24 points on 9-for-19 shooting from the field and 1-of-3 from deep, as well as nine boards. Westbrook could have done a better job facilitating the basketball, as he only had three assists and six turnovers.

As a team, Houston looked far too complacent from the get-go and certainly thought they could take it easy against the Knicks. They put up a much better effort in the fourth, outscoring the home team 32-24, but it was a case of being too little too late.

Knicks rookie RJ Barett led the charge with 27 points, five boards and five dimes in 30 minutes. The Duke product even received some praise from Rockets superstar James Harden after the match.

The Knicks have now won back-to-back games and improved to 19-42. Meanwhile, the Rockets fell to 39-21.
