Russell Westbrook says chance to win a title is the most exciting thing about joining Rockets

Rockets, Russell Westbrook

In his first press conference as a member of the Houston Rockets, Russell Westbrook claimed that he is most excited about the chance to win a championship with his new team:

Westbrook was swapped to the Rockets in exchange for Chris Paul and first-round picks in the offseason. He leaves a Thunder team that finished 49-33 last season for a Rockets team that finished 53-29.

Westbrook has not seen playoff success for quite some time. For the last three seasons, the Thunder have been knocked out in the first round. Even with Paul George and a solid supporting cast, the Thunder couldn’t find a way to win a series.

While the Rockets haven’t won the championship in the Harden era, they have come a lot closer than the Thunder. In 2018, they were two wins away from upsetting the Golden State Warriors in the Conference Finals. Then, Chris Paul injured his hamstring. The Rockets went on to lose back to back games. To add salt to the wound, they were knocked out by the Warriors again in the next postseason, this time in the Conference Semi-Finals.

Now that Paul has been replaced by Westbrook, the Rockets will look to avoid another playoff heartbreak with a younger and more athletic guard. We’ll see Houston can overcome their postseason demons and finally advance to an NBA Finals on the backs of Westbrook and Harden.
