Russell Westbrook claims he has no friends when he hoops in regard to Thunder

Russell Westbrook, Thunder, Rockets

Russell Westbrook showed out against his former team, nearly triple-doubling against the Oklahoma City Thunder on his matchup against them since leaving for the Houston Rockets this summer. While the energized dynamo was friendly and appreciative of his longtime former teammates, once the opening whistle blew, he was all about competing, as usual.

“When I hoop, I have no friends. Steven [Adams] is a real close friend of mine, but inside those lines, there’s no friends,” said Westbrook after the game, according to Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle. “Spalding. That’s my friend. And my teammates, but that is it. Before the game, after the game, I’ll talk to my guys. That doesn’t mean I don’t have friends, but during the game, I don’t. If you try to talk to me, I ain’t going to say s*** to you.””

Westbrook spent several years next to the core of Steven Adams, Andre Roberson, and others — becoming the only piece the Thunder franchise has had since its inception.

The 30-year-old guard went scoreless in the first quarter, missing all of his five shots from the floor, but he finished on fire the rest of the way, nailing nine of his next 11 attempts. The Rockets trailed by 13 at the end of the quarter, which prompted Westbrook to address the Rockets after the game about making sure they play with that steady energy from the opening tip.

Westbrook was all smiles and gracious with his former teammates after the game ended, but he was as fierce as he is against other teams, finishing with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists in a 116-112 win over the Thunder.
