Russell Westbrook a no-show at Drew League game versus James Harden, Chris Paul

Russell Westbrook

The Drew League is a long-running institution from South Central Los Angeles wherein several NBA players – predominantly of SoCal origin – get a chance to reach out to the local community by way of staging some friendly basketball games during the NBA offseason.

The Houston RocketsJames Harden and Chris Paul are just two of those NBA superstars who’d recently partaken (and won together) in Drew League action. Long Beach native and the Okahoma City Thunder‘s very own Russell Westbrook was also slated to participate in that contest against Harden and Paul.

However, as the L.A. Daily News’ Mark Medina pointed out on Twitter, the reigning league MVP opted to sit-out what should’ve been a nice teaser for this upcoming season’s Western Conference clash between the Rockets and the Thunder’s brightest stars:

Considering that Westbrook is on the cusp of signing a max extension with OKC, it’s understandable then why the UCLA product didn’t show up for this weekend’s star-studded exhibition game. His health is of premium value right now, so he’s right to take the more cautious route and avoid the possibility of an untimely injury before he cashes in big-time.

On the other hand, Russ should also expect the internet trolls to start cashing in on his refusal to play. Has anybody out there thought of calling him Wussell Restbrook yet?
