It looks like the whirlwind of player movement after that shocking four-team deal involving James Harden may not be done yet. For Victor Oladipo, at least.
The newly acquired Houston Rockets guard, who was a centerpiece of the blockbuster that sent Harden to the Brooklyn Nets, is reportedly not keen on staying in H-Town this season. According to a report from Kevin O’Connor from The Ringer, the two-time All-Star prefers to be traded elsewhere.
Victor Oladipo, 28, reportedly still wishes to be traded back to the Eastern Conference to be with the team of his choice, the Miami Heat.
If Oladipo really wants nothing to do with Clutch City, this would be a cruel twist for Rockets fans who are already visualizing his fit with the team’s new core of John Wall, Christian Wood, and DeMarcus Cousins. While the Rockets are not obligated to give in to his supposed demands, they might have to do so soon.
Victor Oladipo will become an unrestricted free agent after the season, giving him full control of the decision where to sign next. If Oladipo is truly bound for South Beach, the Rockets might as well get something for him while they still can.
If not, he’ll be considered an expensive rental. The Rockets, meanwhile, have already had enough of players not wanting to play in Houston. They would likely want to avoid another similar James Harden situation, where he simply played through the motions in his final games with the franchise.
Oladipo has looked a bit more like himself this season, and he would be an intriguing new star to build around if he actually wanted to stay. The 28-year-old guard notched 20.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.7 steals in his final nine games for the Pacers. But if he doesn’t want to be there, that presents an issue.
Interestingly enough, the Rockets could have just kept Caris LeVert, who’s under contract for two more seasons after this one. Houston decided to reroute him to the Indiana Pacers for Victor Oladipo, though, and now we’ll have to wait and see the ramifications of that decision.
