Rumor: Tyronn Lue expected to be frontrunner for several NBA coaching jobs
Los Angeles Clippers assistant coach Tyronn Lue could soon find his way back in the head coaching ranks, as he’s expected to be the frontrunner for several openings in the near future, according to Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated.
Lue had been already linked to the Brooklyn Nets when the team parted ways with former coach Kenny Atkinson, and he was recently linked to the New Orleans Pelicans job, shall they choose to part ways with Alvin Gentry after being eliminated from the playoff race.
Other intriguing openings could come down the grapevine as well.
The Houston Rockets are unlikely to keep Mike D’Antoni past this season if they can’t get to the NBA Finals. That much was made clear when the front office offered him an incentive-laced contract that D’Antoni turned down, even after the Rockets tried to rework the offer to make it more palatable.
The Philadelphia 76ers could also be a potential landing spot for Lue, as a Ben Simmons injury could spell an early exit, forcing a lot of changes across the board, including that of coach Brett Brown.
Tyronn Lue had already expressed plenty of interest in reuniting with Kyrie Irving after his days with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The chance of coaching a superstar in his prime like Kevin Durant also seems too good to pass up.
The Nets, however, will have candidates like Jason Kidd, Jeff Van Gundy, and others linked to the position.
Still, it sure looks like Lue will be back on the sidelines as a head coach in the near future.
