RUMOR: Rockets trying to trade Clint Capela to get assets for a wing player, new center

Clint-Capela-Rockets

The Houston Rockets have begun taking inquiries on center Clint Capela, his potential departure could be the first in a series of moves.

ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski reported the Rockets are hoping to acquire future assets in a trade for Capela and subsequently flip those assets for a wing player and a new center.

Clint Capela has tremendous value because he is in the second year of a five-year, $80 million deal he signed back in July of 2018. He has far less financial baggage than the likes of Kevin Love or Andre Drummond, but in the same vein might be just as valuable as either of those players on both ends of the floor.

The 25-year-old is averaging 13.9 points and 13.8 rebounds too go along with 1.8 blocks. He cleans the glass on both ends and is a viable rim protector for any contender.

Capela would seem to have a tremendous impact on Houston’s ability to make a deep playoff run this season, so why is it they might consider flipping him?

Well, if they acquire a top draft pick from the Hawks, that in turn might go a long way in an effort to acquire the likes of Minnesota Timberwolves small forward Robert Covington or even Detroit Pistons center Andre Drummond.

It might even be possible for the Rockets to go after both Covington and Drummond, if they get the appropriate assets for Capela. The Pistons, in particular do not have a ton of leverage due in part to Drummond’s impending player option. Houston also roster a number of backcourt players that could be of interest to the Timberwolves in addition to future considerations.
