The Houston Rockets tried to jump in the Anthony Davis sweepstakes before he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday, though mostly in part of doing their due diligence.
The Rockets reportedly offered center Clint Capela as part of a potential three-team deal in hopes to add a third star to their roster, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Several teams built potential packages in efforts to get the New Orleans Pelicans’ attention, but only the Lakers and the Boston Celtics were realistically in their immediate line of sight, given the assets in the line.
Both the Lakers and Celtics had enough assets to trade for Davis without the need of a third team to aid them, while franchises like the New York Knicks and the Rockets would need another team to add compensation for a decent offer.
Houston has an albatross contract in its hands with the $125 million owed to Chris Paul over the next three years, as well as the $169 million still owed to James Harden over the course of the next four years.
Capela’s contract is one teams would consider attractive, as five years and $80 million ($10 million in incentives) for a 25-year-old player leaves a very high ceiling for a big man that has already showed signs of making strides with his free throw shooting, rebounding, and defense.
The trade for Davis was highly unlikely to happen, but the fact that general manager Daryl Morey offered up Capela this willingly means he’s very serious about giving this team a different look by next season.
