Rumor: Rockets the latest contender to register interest in Serge Ibaka

Rockets Serge Ibaka

Serge Ibaka has become a popular name being floated around ahead of NBA free agency, with multiple teams expressing interest in his services. Among the teams that could pursue him during the shortened offseason, the Houston Rockets have emerged as a possible landing spot, per ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.

Ibaka has played the past four seasons with the Toronto Raptors, helping the Raptors win an NBA title in the 2018-2019 season. Just this past season, Ibaka averaged a career-high 15.4 points per game for the Raptors. He also averaged 8.2 rebounds per game and shot 38.5 percent from three-point range.

The veteran power forward’s ability to space the floor and play formidable defense is going to entice teams this offseason. Even at 31 years old, Ibaka could be a productive role player for a contending team in the NBA.

Of course, if Ibaka were to join the Rockets, he would reunite with James Harden and if he were to stay in Houston, Russell Westbrook. All three of them played together on the Oklahoma City Thunder, who advanced — but lost — in the NBA Finals in the 2011-2012 season.

However, with the Rockets moving on from Mike D’Antoni and Daryl Morey, the futures of Harden and Westbrook in Houston are up in the air. Given that, Ibaka may decide to wait on their statuses before choosing where he’ll play next season.

Besides the Rockets, the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets have been discussed as possible suitors for Ibaka this offseason. Regardless of whether it’s the Rockets or not, Ibaka is evidently going to have an active market in free agency.
