Rumor: Rockets likely to release James Nunnally in favor of Kenneth Faried if they can’t find trade for Carmelo Anthony

Carmelo Anthony, James Nunnally, Rockets

The Houston Rockets could choose to terminate James Nunnally’s contract in hopes to sign free-agent big man Kenneth Faried before Monday’s matinee game against the Philadelphia 76ers, according to cap guru Albert Nahmad. The Rockets will only have a few hours to find a suitable trade for exiled forward Carmelo Anthony, as Faried will officially clear waivers at 5 p.m. ET — only three hours before tip-off.

Houston has been adamant in pursuit of Faried, who was waived by the Brooklyn Nets over the weekend, hoping they could add him to the roster and put him to work right away to give them a lob-catching presence a la Clint Capela, in light of the latter’s injury.

If that is the case, the Rockets will have only three hours to sign Faried to a deal and get him in uniform before they face Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons and company after splitting wins and losses during the last eight games.

Trading Anthony will likely take more time than a mere few hours, making Nunnally’s waiver a lot more likely of a scenario after he was signed to replace Danuel House Jr., who had completed his 45 days of service as a two-way player.

Nunnally was waived by the Minnesota Timberwolves right when former president/head coach Tom Thibodeau was fired, bound to sign a contract with an EuroLeague team before the Rockets came calling with a 10-day chance to stick in the league.

The 28-year-old debuted with his new team with a nine-point performance against the Brooklyn Nets, only to go scoreless against the Los Angeles Lakers — making that likely his last game with the organization.
