RUMOR: Rockets’ James Nunnally is a prime cut candidate to make room for Kenneth Faried

Kenneth Faried James Nunnally

The Houston Rockets seem poised to sign big man Kenneth Faried, who was bought out by the Brooklyn Nets late Friday night. In order to make room for Faried, the Rockets have to clear a roster spot, and it’s looking like they may cut James Nunnally, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

The Rockets recently signed Nunnally to a 10-day contract, which does not expire until Jan. 25. However, that won’t be much of an issue for the Rockets, as the coast of releasing him would be minimal.

Faried has played in just 12 games for the Nets this season, averaging 5.1 points and 3.7 rebounds over 9.8 minutes per game while shooting 59.5 percent from the floor and 62.5 percent from the free-throw line.

There was a time when Faried was one of the top young big men in the league, but the game has quickly passed him by, as his inability to space the floor offensively and his defensive limitations have made him nothing more than end-of-the-bench type of player in 2019.

In fact, the 29-year-old has not played significant minutes since the 2016-17 campaign.

Faried, who played his collegiate basketball at Morehead State University, was originally selected by the Denver Nuggets in the first round (22nd pick overall) of the 2011 NBA Draft.

Known as a high-energy guy and a rebounding machine, Faried instantly made an impact upon entering the league, registering 10.2 points and 7.7 boards per game during his rookie season.

He spent the first seven years of his career with the Nuggets, consistently averaging in the range of 13 points and nine rebounds before his role began to decrease in 2016-17. Then, by last season, Faried was nothing more than an afterthought in Denver, playing in just 32 games.

He was traded to the Nets this past summer.
