The Houston Rockets are aggressively trying to find a trade for Carmelo Anthony in order to clear room to sign Kenneth Faried, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Faried was bought out by the Brooklyn Nets late Friday night and seems poised to land with the Rockets, so long as Houston can open up a roster spot for him.
Now, the Rockets can also simply release James Nunnally, who the club signed to a 10-day contract on Jan. 16, but before they do that, they are exploring the possibility of trading Anthony.
Houston has until 5 p.m. ET on Monday to clear a roster spot for Faried, so if it can’t find a taker for Anthony soon, it does have a fallback plan.
Keep in mind that the Rockets’ frontcourt is very depleted due to the injury to Clint Capela, so Houston would want to make sure Faried is available for the Rockets’ game against the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday evening.
Of course, finding a trading partner willing to take Anthony will be a tall task even though he is making just $2.4 million this season.
Once one of the league’s best scorers, the game has passed the 34-year-old by over the past several years, as his iso-centric style of play is not conducive to modern offenses. It also doesn’t help matters that Anthony is a poor defender and possesses little versatility on that end of the floor.
Anthony played 10 games for the Rockets this season before essentially being exiled. He averaged 13.4 points per game while shooting 40.5 percent from the field during that time.
