Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is reportedly the Houston Rockets top target in their search for help on the wing and, according to a report from the New York Times’ Marc Stein, KCP would agree to a trade that lands him in Houston if the Rockets can construct one.
Caldwell-Pope can veto any trade, but he wouldn’t mind going to Houston because, aside from the familiar draws of playing for another Western Conference contender and in a state without a state tax, he would get more playing time there.
Caldwell-Pope can veto any trade as what is known as a One-Year Bird, having signed a one-year contract in July with the same team that employed him last season. All indications are that Caldwell-Pope would agree to a trade that lands him in Houston if the Rockets can indeed construct one.
In 30 games for the Lakers this season, Caldwell-Pope is averaging 9.2 points and 2.4 rebounds per game while shooting 40.7 percent from the field, 36.0 percent from beyond the arc and 90.5 percent from the free-throw line. The 25-year-old is playing only 21 minutes per game.
The Rockets and Lakers would likely need a third team to facilitate a KCP trade. Caldwell-Pope is making $12 million this season and is represented by Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, the same agent that represents Lakers superstar LeBron James.
