Rumor: Celtics could eye Steven Adams, Clint Capela by trade deadline if made available again

The Boston Celtics could look to upgrade their center position if they find themselves in the thick of an Eastern Conference playoff race by the trade deadline. Among the names in consideration are Oklahoma City Thunder big man Steven Adams and potentially Clint Capela, should the Houston Rockets make him available for talks once again, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.

Capela was a name on the trade market for a brief few days in July, right before the Rockets went all-in with their pursuit of Russell Westbrook. Capela signed a five-year, $90 million deal ($10 million in incentives), which started last season. His lob-catching and ball-swatting abilities are just what the Celtics need at this moment after head coach Brad Stevens admitted his team would be playing musical chairs with their big men, depending on the lineup.

Capela could be the missing piece the Celtics need to arm up another juggernaut, but it’s tough to tell if the Rockets would be willing to sell, especially when they’re bound to be in contention for a championship bid with this roster.

Adams is one of the pieces the Thunder are looking to move to fully kickstart their rebuild after the departures of Westbrook and Paul George. The big man will make a hefty $53.4 million in the next two seasons after signing a four-year, $100 million pact with the Thunder. He also has a 7.5% trade kicker built into his deal, which would make him a rather pricey acquisition.

Enes Kanter, Daniel Theis, and Robert Williams III have all notched one start apiece through three games this season, giving a clear sign that the starting center job for Boston is still very much up for grabs.
