Rumor: 4 teams asking Pistons about trade involving No. 1 pick

Cade Cunningham, Pistons, NBA Draft

The Detroit Pistons won the 2021 NBA Draft Lottery last month and are in position to draft Cade Cunningham with the No. 1 pick in the draft. While the current expectation is that the Pistons will indeed take Cunningham with that pick, there are teams inquiring about a potential trade involving that selection, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Houston Rockets, New Orleans Pelicans and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Via ESPN’s Jonathan Givony:

Teams including Cleveland, Houston, New Orleans and Oklahoma City are among those making overtures to evaluate what it would take to move up to the No. 1 slot, sources say, but those talks are at an early stage, and any trade is unlikely to be consummated until much closer to the draft, if at all. From all accounts, Detroit is comfortable standing pat at No. 1 and taking Cunningham but will be active in exploring the possibility of trading down and obtaining additional assets, with Mobley a potential target if something gets done.

Out of the teams mentioned, it’s hard to see the Pelicans (No. 10 pick) or Thunder (No. 6 pick) getting a deal done unless a proven star is on the table, and even that might not be enough. The Cavs have the No. 3 pick and the Rockets have the No. 2 pick, so working out a trade there seems a bit more reasonable.

Ultimately, though, the likeliest best is the Pistons just standing pat and taking Cade Cunningham first overall. Pistons general manager Troy Weaver is going to do his due diligence and look into every option available, but Cunningham is viewed as the consensus No. 1 pick who figures to be a star in the NBA. Simply staying put and taking him would be a smart move.
