Rudy Gobert on Bojan Bogdanovic’s buzzer-beater: ‘He’s got big balls’

Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert had a short but true compliment for teammate Bojan Bogdanovic, who hit a highly improbable game-winner against the Houston Rockets to take a 114-113 win on Sunday night.

Bogdanovic, who was 1-of-6 from the field before firing off a heavily contested 28-footer, had the trust of the coaching staff to be on the floor, despite being out of rhythm most of the game:

“He’s got big balls, said Gobert, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon. “That’s all I’ve got to say.”

Bogdanovic was very appreciative of the trust Jazz head coach Quin Snyder and the rest of the coaching staff had in him to not only be on the floor but also design the play for him to take the last shot:

“It’s big-time from their part to have that trust and confidence in me that I would make the last shot after the game that I had,” said Bogdanovic. “I was, from the beginning of the game, kind of off. But when you have a coaching staff that draws the last play for you, you better go out there with the confidence.”

And who can blame them?

Bogdanovic is shooting an impressive 42.4% from deep on high volume and already had a previous game-winner to his name this season — the only player to have hit multiple game-winners in the 2019-20 campaign.

“That’s just a great shot. I don’t deserve the screen assist on this one,” Gobert said with a laugh.

“They guarded it well, but sometimes great offense beats great defense,” said Donovan Mitchell, who scored 10 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter. “He can go 0-for-20, 0-for-21, 0-for-30. When it comes down to it, he’s the guy you want with the ball on that play.”

Bogdanovic is 12th in the league in 3-point shooting and is now 2-for-2 on buzzer-beaters with the game in the balance:

“He’s our best shooter,” said Jazz point guard Mike Conley. “He’s a guy who’s made big shots in the past for us. We rely on that, and he feels like he’s the guy that can do that no matter how he’s shooting.”

The legend of Big Shot Boj lives on, and it couldn’t come at a better time.

The Jazz have won two close games in a row to bounce back from a season-worst five-game skid — now drawing 1.5 games of separation with the Rockets and winning the season series 2-1, which could come in handy at the end of the season when fighting for playoff positioning.
