The Houston Rockets have withdrawn their protest over an errant foul committed during its Dec. 22 game against the L.A. Clippers, per Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle. The foul was called on against Lou Williams in the fourth quarter of that game.
The issue surrounding the protest is that Clippers guard Jawun Evans played the last 3:10 minutes of the game even though he committed his sixth and final foul. However, that foul was credited instead to his teammate Lou Williams. The Rockets’ withdrawal of the protest is because they felt the NBA wouldn’t replay those last minutes of the game, even though the league did acknowledge the error the day after the contest.
During the said time, Evans is seen to have seemingly committed a foul against James Harden with 3:10 minutes still remaining. That happened when he reached in just as Harden was driving for the basket. The foul was instead called on Williams who was away from the play when that happened. The Clippers went on to win the game against the Rockets, 128-118.
The last time the NBA upheld a protest was in a game involving Shaquille O’Neal, where he was disqualified with five rather than six fouls. That was in 2008 involving the Atlanta Hawks against the Miami Heat. This time around though, the Rockets have decided to instead withdraw its protest against the Clippers.
The Rockets were within three points of the Clippers when the incident happened. Harden sank both free throws to bring the score closer to the Clippers. Evans had already drawn two fouls against Harden during the game. Harden scored 51 points during the Rockets’ loss. So far, there has been no comment about this withdrawal from Rockets general manager Daryl Morey.
