Rockets star Russell Westbrook speaks out on facing an ‘unbelievable talent’ like Ja Morant

Memphis Grizzlies rookie point guard Ja Morant already has a huge fan in former NBA MVP point guard Russell Westbrook of the Houston Rockets.

Ahead of Houston’s Wednesday bout with Memphis, Westbrook called the leading Rookie of the Year candidate an “unbelievable talent” when asked about his thoughts on facing Morant.

“I never worry about my opponent or what they’re doing. I know when I’m at my best I’m able to do whatever I need to do. Ja is going to be a great player. He’s an unbelievable talent,” Westbrook said, via Jonathan Feigen in the Houston Chronicle.

“He’s been having a great year. But it doesn’t matter who I go against, what day or what time, I don’t really worry about or spend time on what they’re doing. I worry about myself, how i can affect my team. That’s it.”

Ja Morant is averaging 17.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game in 51 appearances in his debut season in the NBA out of Murray State. The second overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft has miraculously led the young Grizzlies to the last spot in the Western Conference playoff field at the moment, as Memphis clings to a 2.5 game advantage for the eight seed.

Russell Westbrook was once the young, hotshot floor general with springy hops out of UCLA as a point guard drafted in the lottery for the then-Seattle SuperSonics in their relocation to Oklahoma City. Westbrook was traded in a blockbuster deal to the Rockets this past offseason for Chris Paul and draft picks, reuniting the two-time All-Star Game MVP with his former Thunder backcourt teammate in James Harden.
