Rockets’ Russell Westbrook moves up to 14th on the all-time assists list

Russell Westbrook of the Houston Rockets has climbed up to 14th of the all-time assists list.

Per the NBA, Westbrook has surpassed Lenny Wilkens in the all-time assists list. Next on the list is Maurice Cheeks.

Westbrook, of course, has been known as the triple-double king for the past few years. So it’s no surprise that he’s stuffing the stat sheet night in and night out. This season — his first with the Rockets — the former league MVP is dishing out 7.4 assists per night. This is the first time in four seasons that he’s averaging under 10 dimes a night. For his career, he’s averaging 8.4 assists.

His passing game seems to be the most unappreciated part of his play style. After all, whenever we hear his name, we immediately imagine potent images of Westbrook’s aggressive drives to the hoop, his blinding speed, and vicious dunks. But it is exactly this perception that has allowed Westbrook to pile up his assists.

Given his sheer athleticism, Westbrook has the ability to easily collapse the defense. Opposing teams know about this. And if they want a shot at winning, Westbrook should be at the top of the priority list. But Westbrook, in turn, is aware that all eyes are on him when he’s on offense. The wise thing to do whenever two or three people gang up on you is to pass the rock to an open teammate.

It sounds simple but only a few people in the world have the ability to do that consistently. Westbrook is definitely one of those special people.
