Russell Westbrook previously joined Robertson in league history by averaging a triple-double during his MVP season in 2016-17—the only two players to achieve such a feat for an entire season. The former Oklahoma City Thunder star floor general, now with the Rockets after Houston traded for him in the past offseason to reunite ex-teammate James Harden, also averaged a triple-double in the successive seasons.
Entering the 2019-20 season, there was quite a deal of speculation about how Westbrook and Harden would coexist after reuniting in the same backcourt. Both were drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics and later Thunder organization and appeared alongside Kevin Durant and Serge Ibaka in the 2012 NBA Finals, losing to James and the Miami Heat in five games. So far the returns look positive as the Rockets are 23-11—good for fourth-best in the contentious Western Conference.
There is also buzz surrounding Westbrook, however, with trade rumors emerging. The Ringer’s Ryen Russillo reported the Rockets were “open” to trading Westbrook just months after acquiring him in a massive deal with OKC. Houston had to part with veteran point guard Chris Paul, along with several picks, to acquire Harden’s friend, Westbrook, over the summer in spite of the former MVP signing a contract extension with the Thunder two years ago.
