Rockets’ Russell Westbrook has been coming in early for work, trying to regain his rhythm

Russell Westbrook, Rockets

Because of two offseason surgeries, Houston Rockets superstar guard Russell Westbrook wasn’t able to run or play five on five in the summer.

Westbrook had a minor procedure on his surgically repaired right knee after the 2019 playoffs ended. He also had surgery on his left hand to repair a torn ligament in a finger.

As a result, the new Rockets star has looked a little rusty in the preseason, but he’s trying to regain his rhythm before the regular season starts and is even coming in early to get extra work in.

Westbrook is ramping up his efforts before the regular season tips off against the Bucks on Oct. 24 at Toyota Center. While the world patiently awaits Westbrook’s pregame fashion show, arena officials say he has been coming in early for work. Russ was at the court at 3:30 in the afternoon, as employees were preparing for their shifts.

He said Wednesday his knee is feeling better.

“Just trying to keep the pace up, keep my wind up,” he said. “This is the first time I haven’t been able to run in the summertime. I haven’t had a chance to play five on five. This is like my third time playing, and I don’t practice all the time to be able to do it. For me, this is like my first time being able to do that and try to get my wind, body and legs together.”

Last season for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Westbrook averaged a triple-double for the third consecutive season. The former MVP put up 22.9 points, 11.1 rebounds and 10.7 assists while shooting 42.8 percent from the field, 29.0 percent from beyond the arc and 65.6 percent from the free-throw line.

Once Westbrook gets his timing back, he’ll be fine. Westbrook is one of the fastest players in the NBA. He’s a blur in the open court, impossible to stay in front of and can get to the rim at will while finishing in heavy traffic.
