Rockets rumors: Houston interested in Hawks’ Kent Bazemore

Kent Bazemore

Carmelo Anthony may not be the only ex- Atlanta Hawks player suiting up for the Houston Rockets, beginning next season. According to Kelly Iko of USA TODAY Sports, while citing an anonymous source,  the Rockets still have their eyes locked in on Hawks guard Kent Bazemore, who is coming off the best season of his NBA career.

Houston is still active on trade fronts, perusing the market for a wing defender, and remains interested in Kent Bazemore of the Atlanta Hawks—according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

The Hawks know of Houston’s interest in Kent Bazemore, which is also why Atlanta general manager Travis Schlenk is carefully exploring possibilities of taking full advantage of the Rockets’ desire to acquire the 29-year-old shooting guard.

Hawks GM Travis Schlenk wants assets, will always listen to offers, and would take back a contract such as Ryan Anderson’s but would require it be attached with a draft pick and/or a young player.

Bazemore has two more years left on his current deal. He is set to earn $18.08 million next season and $19.26 million more in the 2019-20 campaign before hitting the free agent market in the summer of 2020. Bazemore’s significant cap hit figures to be a big obstacle for Atlanta in case it wants to look for other trade partners other than Houston to unload the swingman, but the Hawks’ willingness to absorb Anderson’s onerous contract could be the telling factor in this transaction. Anderson has $41.6 million left to earn over the next two seasons.

Bazemore was among the few consistent performers for Atlanta last season in which he averaged 12.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.
