Rockets’ PJ Tucker jokes Clint Capela ‘steals a lot of my rebounds’ after another 20+ board night

Clint Capela trotted out yet another 20-plus-rebound game, finishing with 22 boards during Sunday’s 137-123 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. Forward PJ Tucker, who starts next to Capela as part of the Houston Rockets frontcourt, noted the big man steals a lot of his would-be rebounds.

“He steals a lot of my rebounds. Trust me I know,” said Tucker. “Clint’s playing hard. He’s finally in shape. He’s all over the place. We’ll keep him where he’s at because he’s playing really well right now. I like it.”

Capela has now pulled down 20 or more boards in six of the last seven games, with Friday night’s 19-rebound effort being the only one impacting that streak. He’s put up a double-double in each of his last nine games, now averaging 14.1 points and 16.5 rebounds in November and 14.6 points with 14.6 rebounds for the season.

It’s no surprise that Capela is trying to ensnare every miss off the glass, as he has a likely incentive built into his multi-year deal with the Rockets, which will reward him $500,000 at season’s end if he manages a 30% rebounding rate or better.

Capela is averaging a career-high in rebound and blocks (2.0 per game), but he’s in danger of missing out on another performance bonus if he keeps scuffing from the foul line. The Swiss-born center will be awarded $500,000 as part of an unlikely incentive if he can hit 65% of his free throws. So far he’s been shooting a 44.2% clip from the charity stripe after narrowly missing the mark last season with 63.6% of his shots going in at the foul line.
