Rockets PG Chris Paul says Dirk Nowitzki was his favorite player back in high school

The Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks both occupy a similar space in the state of Texas, while each NBA franchise is currently sporting a slew of both up-and-comers and legends alike. With the Rockets employing veteran point guard Chris Paul, the Mavericks are currently in the midst of veteran power forward Dirk Nowitzki’s final go-round atop the highest level.

As a result, Paul recently had some very interesting things to say about Nowitzki, who will be retiring from the NBA after the conclusion of this season. Perhaps most notably, Paul made a point to mention that the Mavericks legend was actually his favorite player back in high school.

““It’s doing to be crazy to see him go,” Paul said, via The Houston Chronicle. “The shooting. It’s crazy the way this league goes. Some people remember this Dirk, but for us to have played in the league —and that [2011 Mavericks] championship run, that’s the Dirk that I remember.”

Fellow Rockets guard Eric Gordon paid Nowitzki a similar compliment while praising the soon-to-be retiree.

“He was one of my favorite players growing up because he can really shooting,” Gordon added, via The Houston Chronicle. “You’d never seen a big man who could shoot like that. A 7-foot guy with all those fade-aways, shooting over people, that high-arching shot that he makes all the time. Stuff like that never gets old to watch.”

Unfortunately for fans like Paul and Gordon, the Mavericks are not currently in line to make the playoffs in what will become Nowitzki’s final season in Dallas.
