Rockets PF Carmelo Anthony says perception of Knicks hurt them in free agency

Carmelo Anthony

For Carmelo Anthony, the NBA players’ perception of the New York Knicks might have affected the team’s chances of acquiring good players from the free agency market.

As reported by Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News, Anthony reflected on his days as a member of the Knicks, where he spent six and a half seasons. During his tenure with the team, it should be pointed out that the whole state of the franchise was not so good. Not only were the Knicks losing badly, but the front office was also getting a bad rep:

“I think just the business. Everything that was going on,” Anthony said. “The perception of New York Knicks basketball or the organization. Not basketball but the organization. I think it probably scared a lot of people away. Scared some people away. Not knowing the nuances and the ins and outs of kind of what was going on, who is in charge, who is not.”

During Anthony’s tenure, the Knicks went through four different team presidents and general managers and four different full-time head coaches. For Anthony, this might have sent signals to prospective free agents that not everything was going well in the organization.

“So it was more than just basketball when it came to people making those decisions. A lot of times the decision is not the basketball player. It’s the people that’s around him, it’s the team that has a heavy influence on a lot of those decisions.”

Anthony is averaging 13.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game this season.
