To begin what was a dramatic offseason, the Houston Rockets acquired Chris Paul from the Los Angeles Clippers. Two weeks later, Leslie Alexander announced he was selling the team, which was eventually sold to Tilman Fertitta for a reported $2.2 billion.
While the Rockets only gave up role players and prospects in the Paul trade, he will become an unrestricted free agent following the 2017-18 NBA season. According to Sirius XM NBA Radio, Fertitta was asked about the nine-time All-Star’s future in Houston:

As Paul will be 33 years old when his current deal ends, the Rockets can offer him a five-year, $207 million contract extension. While there have been debates about paying Paul significant money at 38 years old, it will be interesting to see how Fertitta and company navigate through the situation. Despite battling injuries throughout his career, Paul’s game will translate well as he ages.
Having said this, all the focus remains on the upcoming season. After finishing third in the Western Conference, Paul and James Harden form one of the league’s best backcourts. As they develop chemistry throughout the 82-game season, the expectations are the Rockets will be the greatest threat to the defending champion Golden State Warriors.
