Rockets news: Owner Les Alexander ups his donation to Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund to $10M

With the overwhelming support of the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund by Houston-based sports franchises and athletes connected to the cause, Houston Rockets owner Les Alexander has increased his donation amount to $10 million, informing Mayor Sylvester Turner of it Tuesday morning, according to Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle.

Alexander had donated $4 million in his behalf as well as the Rockets’ — one of the most sizable contributions to a cause that has seen many victims who are in need of food, shelter, or suffering injuries due to the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

While the team did not make this donation increase public, a Rockets spokesperson confirmed that Alexander spoke with Turner about increasing this contribution and add to the cause.

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt started a Houston Flood Relief Fund, which quickly jumped from a goal of $500,000 to $1 million and most recently $1.5 million after support from the likes of Rockets new point guard Chris Paul, who chipped in with $50,000 of his own.

The Rockets released a statement over social media on Monday, including the owner’s public contribution to the cause — one that now has more than doubled in hopes of further aiding victims.

“Our hearts are heavy seeing the devastation that so many of our friends, family and neighbors are experiencing, the team announced in a statement. “Leslie Alexander has contributed $4 million to Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund in an effort to help Clutch City come back stronger than ever. Please stay safe, Houston.”
