Rockets news: Houston tells Bobby Brown he will be waived
As reported by Mark Berman from Fox 26, Houston Rockets guard Bobby Brown said the team informed him that he will soon be waived.
“It’s tough, but it is a business. I’m not going to hold my head down or anything like that. I’ll be all right.”
Berman also adds that Brown said the Rockets did not discard the possibility of bringing him back in the future.
With James Harden going down recently with an injury that will sideline him for quite some time, Brown probably expected an increase in playing time. This opportunity was given to spark plug Gerald Green, however, and the Rockets have already decided they will guarantee Green’s contract for the rest of the season after the swingman combined for 56 points on 18-of-31 shooting, including 15-of-25 from beyond the arc. The addition of Green’s contract to the books means they need to shorten their roster below the 15-men player limit, which is the reason why Brown will be released.
An undrafted player out of California State Fullerton, Brown started his career as a free agent acquisition from the Sacramento Kings in 2008. The 33-year old has played for Sacramento, Minnesota, New Orleans, Los Angeles Clippers, and Houston. After the 2010-11 season, Brown left the NBA to play overseas and in other professional leagues until 2016. He then signed with the Houston Rockets and played two seasons for them.
Before signing with the Rockets in 2016, Brown had previous relationships with players on that roster. He played with James Harden in the Drew League over the summers, knew Trevor Ariza from his childhood, played with Eric Gordon before in the LA Clippers, and knew Michael Beasly from playing in China. All these relationships Brown had with his teammates sure make his release tougher.
Brown appeared in 20 games this season for the Rockets. He averaged 2.5 points, 0.6 assists, and 0.4 rebounds shooting 32.8% from the field and 27.5% from the three-point arc in 5.8 minutes a game. It is highly unlikely that any other team will give him an opportunity anytime in the near future, with the G-League showcase game coming soon and teams looking for younger prospects rather than older veterans.
