Rockets news: Houston billionaire Dan Friedkin expresses interest in buying team from Leslie Alexander

Since Houston Rockets CEO Tad Brown announced last month that team owner Leslie Alexander has put up the franchise for sale, a number of potential buyers have already emerged. From Tilman Fertitta, Dikembe Mutombo, Yao Ming, to Beyonce, they have all been rumored to be interested in purchasing a stake with the team.

Now, another billionaire has reportedly expressed his interest in buying the Rockets. Toyota Gulf States CEO Dan Friedkin spoke with Mark Berman of Fox 26 Houston, where he confirmed his intentions and also cited the good relationship his company has had with Alexander over the years.

“I’ve expressed interest in exploring the purchase of the Houston Rockets,” Friedkin said in a statement released by his company.

“Les Alexander has done an outstanding job building a high caliber organization with a winning tradition.  Over the years we have enjoyed a close partnership with the Rockets and Les through Toyota’s naming rights of the arena”

“As a Rockets fan and Houstonian it would be exciting and a privilege to build on the storied legacy of NBA basketball in this city.”

Friedkin was born in San Diego, California, but when his father founded the Friedkin Companies, he has since called Houston his home, and has been proud to represent the city. He has partnered with the Rockets in building their arena, which his company also owns the rights to its name. His previous business transactions with the franchise will definitely be an advantage for him, as well as his love for the game of basketball.

It remains to be seen who among the potential buyers will eventually own the Rockets. However, it’s also possible that stakes will be sold to different investors, with the majority ownership held by whoever will own 51 percent of it or more. The development may be thought of as a big adjustment to make for their executives, but with the passion these possible buyers have for the game, the franchise appears to continue being in good hands.
