In the last several seasons, tanking has become a major topic of discussion around the league with teams outside of the playoff picture.
Much of this began with the Philadelphia 76ers under then-general manager Sam Hinkie, who helped create this notion that he was putting the team in position to lose games in order to gather a top first-round pick in the draft.
With that in mind, the NBA Board of Governors recently passed new rules for draft lottery reform and player resting to help prevent tanking from occurring moving forward. It didn’t take long for Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey to take a playful jab over social media at Hinkie’s expense.

In the new reformed NBA lottery format, the team with the worst record in the league no longer has the best chance of landing the first overall pick. In fact, the three teams with the worst record will share even odds to earn the selection. This greatly lessens the incentive to lose games with the chances shifted.
This decision from the NBA could create a dramatic shift throughout the league, especially for teams well out of the playoff picture. Ultimately, it further pushes the agenda that teams must put the most competitive group of players on the floor on any given night.
