Rockets’ James Harden takes out MVP ad in a Milwaukee newspaper

James Harden, Rockets

Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo is in the midst of a historic season. Antetokounmpo is averaging 27.4 points, 12.6 rebounds and 6.0 assists — no player in history has averaged at least 27 points, 12 boards and 6.0 assists since Oscar Robertson in the 1961-62 season — while leading the Bucks to the best record in the league.

If he is not the MVP of the league, then Antetokounmpo is surely the MVP in Milwaukee … but someone forgot to tell James Harden.

Adidas and Harden ran a bold full-page ad in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Tuesday making the argument for why The Beard should win his second consecutive MVP. The ad includes the following message:

“You’re also free to be mad at James Harden’s step-back,” the ad reads. “You’re free to call it a travel and torch it on your podcast. Quick question though: if YOU could pull off that step-back wouldn’t you do it? James Harden thinks you might. But he freely accepts you might not. …

“The point is, whomever you vote for MVP, it won’t change James Harden. He feels free to play the game how he plays it. James Harden is free to be James Harden. And you are free to be you.”

Harden’s play has been superlative, as he handily leads the NBA in scoring at 36.4 points per game while also averaging 7.5 assists and 6.4 rebounds. However, he has also been subject to criticism on behalf of opponents and fans, who decry the patented step-back and also point to Harden’s tendency to draw whistles and get to the charity stripe.

Regardless of who wins the MVP, both Harden and Antetokounmpo have produced two of the greatest seasons in recent memory.
