Rockets’ James Harden moves past Elgin Baylor into 4th on all-time 40-point games list

James Harden, Elgin Baylor

Houston Rockets superstar James Harden had another monster outing on Saturday, as he torched the Phoenix Suns en route to a game-high 47 points (15-of-27 from the field, 8-of-9 from the line), along with nine 3-pointers, six rebounds, seven assists, and a block in 34 minutes of play.

This was Harden’s 89th 40-point performance in his entire career, and by reaching this milestone, he just surpassed Hall of Famer Elgin Baylor for the No. 4 spot for the most 40-point games in the history of the league:

Only Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant have more:

What an achievement this was for Harden, who has been absolutely balling all season long for the Rockets. Right now, the former Most Valuable Player is averaging a league-best 38.8 points (on 44.9 percent shooting), 5.8 rebounds, 7.5 assists, 1.9 steals, and 0.7 blocks while also knocking down 5.1 3-pointers per ballgame on a 36.7 percent clip. These are some dizzying numbers, and it was more of the same on Saturday, with the 6-foot-5 combo guard leading his side to a 139-125 victory against the Suns.

For his part, Harden’s backcourt buddy, Russell Westbrook, also reached a milestone himself on Saturday, with the eight-time All-Star climbing the ranks on the league’s all-time scoring list:

Westbrook was very impressive against Phoenix as well, logging 30 points (on 11-of-21 shooting), four rebounds, 10 assists, two steals, and a block in 33 minutes of play.

This was Houston’s third straight victory, with the team now in possession of a 20-9 record and the fourth spot in the Western Conference.
